Dishwashers

Freestanding Full size

Full-width dishwashers are usually about 85cm tall,

55-60cm deep and 60cm wide. They will fit 12+ place settings (120-150 items) and are ideal for larger households. There's plenty of colour choices to chose from a selection of white, silver, black, cream and stainless steel.

Freestanding Slimline

Slimline dishwashers are around 45cm wide. Similar to full-size dishwashers, 55cm tall and 55-60cm deep. They will fit roughly 9-10 place settings (90-100 items) and typically have a ‘small on the outside but large on the inside’ design. There's plenty of colour choices to chose from a selection of white, silver, black and stainless steel.

Fully integrated dishwashers

Integrated dishwashers are fully built into the kitchen units. If you opt for an integrated dishwasher, it’ll be hidden behind a cupboard door to give a more unified look. The control panel sits on the top lip of the door, which gives you easy access when choosing your dishwasher program.

Semi Integrated dishwashers

Semi-integrated dishwashers offer controls that are built into the exterior panel of the dishwasher door so that the controls are visible when the dishwasher is closed. These dishwashers are often called front control.

Compact

Compact dishwashers are handy for anyone who has limited space in their kitchen area. They can sit on top of a counter as they’re much shorter in height at around 44-45cm, with a capacity of around 6 place settings (40 -60 items). Keep in mind that they’re not necessarily cheaper than a full size dishwasher.

Auto Open Door Drying

Tub interior

Auto Open-Door Drying is a great feature that automatically opens the door at the end of the drying cycle to let fresh air in. This helps to dry the dishes more effectively and can also help to prevent the formation of mold and mildew.

Energy rating

A dishwasher will display an “Energy Guide” label that estimates the annual power consumption and estimated yearly operation cost. A dishwasher with an ENERGY STAR rating indicates it exceeds the federal minimum standards for efficiency.

Eco wash

Eco programmes wash your dishes using 20 to 40% less energy by heating up the water slowly over a longer cycle. This will help you be more energy efficient and save you money too.

A stainless steel tub can hold high heat & hard water better than plastic. The water temperature in a dishwasher gets as high as 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill germs and bacteria. A plastic tub can warp and leak when exposed to high temperatures over a long period. Hard water over a long period can also cause a plastic tub to warp.

Capacity

The size and capacity of a dishwasher’s capacity are generally measured by the number of place settings it can hold per one load. Most homes will have a standard dishwasher. For apartments or smaller households, a compact dishwasher is a better choice due to limited space availability.

Place settings

The number of place settings in a dishwasher refers to the maximum number of dishes, utensils, and glassware that can be accommodated for a single load. A place setting typically includes a dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl, glass, saucer, cup, fork, knife, soup spoon, and teaspoon. Dishwashers are labelled with the number of place settings they can handle, typically ranging from 8 to 16 or more. As examples, a 10 Place setting dishwasher can hold up to 118 items, where as a 15 Place setting dishwasher can hold up to 173 items.

Noise levels

As most homes typically use their dishwasher daily, it mustn’t disturb you and your family. The noise level varies depending on the age and the brand of the model.

If you have an open plan kitchen, prefer a quieter space, or have cheaper night-time energy rates, having a quiet machine may be important to you in which you may want to look for a dishwasher with noise-reducing features.

Noise levels vary depending on the brand and the age of your model. New technologies such as brushless motors and stainless steel interior tubs help to minimise the volume. Most dishwashers now create about 40-55 dB, whereas older models can reach up to 60 dB.

Older models are likely to be louder due to a few factors:

Dishwasher noise levels are measured in dB (decibels) and refer to the sound of a fully-loaded wash.

If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, have an open plan layout, or have cheaper night-time energy rates, having a quiet machine may be important to you.

Older models are likely to be louder due to a few factors:

Quality of insulation – materials and overall design have improved over the years.

Built-in disposal units – this breaks up any pieces of food, but modern appliances no longer have these.

Plastic interior tubs – stainless steel tubs are much more common now and are quieter as they dampen the sound of the water sprays.

To give you an idea of noise levels, the above chart gives some equivalent sounds at a glance.
